Lida Guerrero’s day begins at dawn. She starts the morning harvesting food and preparing it for her family, before starting her second shift of managing the coffee farm. The Women in Coffee series frequently celebrates the increasing role that women have in coffee supply chains, but coupled with that progress it’s important to acknowledge the continuing inequities faced by women on a daily basis. Managing both household duties and contributing to the workforce can limit the time and energy women have to invest in their personal and professional pursuits. Lida helped us see firsthand how what’s required of her as a woman is often at odds with what’s needed of her as a farmer. For gender equity in coffee supply chains (and elsewhere!) there is still a long road ahead.
