Supporting survivors of sexual violence in DRC

For every bag of Organic Congo Coffee purchased, Equal Exchange donates $1 to the Panzi Foundation to support survivors of sexual violence in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo. This project is ongoing, and the annual donation amount is based on sales of this product, with no minimum or maximum amount defined. The Congo Coffee Project donations fund infrastructure development at the Panzi Bulenga Clinic in South Kivu and vocational training for survivors at the Maison Dorcas aftercare center. Here, women learn skills that help foster financial independence and stability. For this project we are proud to partner with Congolese farmer cooperatives who grow these beans along the shores of Lake Kivu in eastern Congo. The combination of rich volcanic soil and high altitudes allow the coffee cherries to mature slowly, leading to incredible sweetness.

Our worker-owned, solar-generating roastery

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.
