Advancing gender equity in Mexico

Quality Manager Alejandra Gurgua Ruiz oversees the sensory and physical analysis of the coffee grown by the farmers of her co-op, Comon Yaj Noptic, in Chiapas, Mexico. That means she roasts samples straight from the farms, tasting and scoring the brewed coffee and communicating feedback to the farmers in order to uphold the co-op’s quality standards. She’s also President of the co-op women’s group, which has bucked tradition by creating its own coffee brand, roasted and sold by the women to the local market, called Cafe Metik, the “fruit of great women.” Alejandra has been supported by the co-op and by Equal Exchange to pursue rigorous training in the global standard for coffee cuppers, the Q Arabica program, and she hopes to someday pass the required 22 exams to complete her certification. Alejandra's dedication to coffee quality is evident in this light roast seasonal brew.

What do our roast names mean?

At our solar-powered roastery in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, our worker-owner team batch roasts and conducts production cuppings daily to bring out the best characteristics in each harvest. With four primary roast levels, we think there’s a favorite here for everyone.

Medium Roast: expect the unique citrus, nutty, fruity, or floral notes of each coffee to shine through.

Full City Roast: you’ll get a bit more of the caramel flavor that comes from the roasting process.

Vienna Roast: starts to bring the smoky aroma and smooth and rich body of a darker roast.

French Roast: with the natural oils fully expressed, it’s an intensely dark and smoky experience akin to dark chocolate.
