Flor Violeta with fellow members of Norandino co-op, Peru

Women’s inclusion and leadership in Peru

This phenomenal coffee follows the stories of two women named Flor, who have navigated leadership roles in Norandino co-op while also farming and tending to their families. Santos Florentina (“Flor”) Lizana Laban, a founding member of the co-op, is a community leader who has represented the organization at international forums, advocating for the benefits of fair trade and co-op membership. Flor Violeta Yajahuanca Solís is a mother of two who grows about 2.5 acres of Catimore, Gran Colombia, and Geisha coffees with her husband. “Today I am a director of the area,” she says. “When they proposed the position to me, I didn't know how to say no. Here we are, in the struggle, coexisting with respect between men and women. The rules are [now] more flexible and allow us to participate more at our own pace. Although, of course, for a woman it is never easy to detach from home, especially when there are small children, but if you set your mind to it and have understanding with your partner, it can be achieved.”

Four of our coffee team in front of the roasting machine

Our worker-owned, solar-generating roastery

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.
