Aiming to reach the sky, with MarketPlace India

Aakasa Cooperative is a group of 10 women who established their own business in 2023 after being inspired by the founding of another cooperative which couldn't accommodate all of them. In response, a new group began forming and for some of them, it was their first experience working outside the home. This allowed them to discover what it means to earn their own income and develop a sense of independence. The name "Aakasa" means "sky" and the founding members explained that it represents their intent: "Through our work and our group, we should aim to reach the sky." Equal Exchange is proud to partner with MarketPlace India, an organization that has empowered co-ops of women artisans for more than 40 years. Through this collaboration we're excited to offer a limited collection of artisan-made textiles that each contribute to the hope and independence of these inspiring women.

Four of our coffee team in front of the roasting machine

Our solar-powered & worker-owned roastery

Our roasting team in Massachusetts batch-roasts coffee daily to bring you the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.
