Grown by small farmer co-ops

These dark chocolate minis are made from organic cacao from Dominican Republic and Peru, organic sugar from Paraguay and Costa Rica, and organic vanilla from Madagascar, all grown by small farmer co-ops. When farmers organize into co-ops they gain crucial market access, run their business democratically, and decide together how to invest in their communities. Traditionally, sugarcane producers do not have control over the processing and marketing of their crops, but our partners at Manduvira Co-op organized to demand higher prices, allowing them to build the first farmer-owned sugar cane mill in Paraguay and sell their organic sugar directly to market.

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. My favorite. Yet it goes well with milk chocolate

"Every year, before Valentine’s Day I use Equal Exchange on a Sunday, in worship to celebrate true love. Love for the earth and all we share it with. Some people don’t like dark chocolate so I always include the milk chocolate as well. One person said she only ate dark chocolate. milk. But then she ate a dark chocolate mini. Then, because the mini was small, right afterwards she ate a milk chocolate mini She said that contrast actually made the milk chocolate taste delicious."

Is this a vegetarian product? Are animal fat based lubricants used in any of the packaging machinery? Is bone-char used in the production of your sugar?
Hello! Regarding your question about bone char, we use two sugars in our chocolate bars - both organic raw cane sugar and organic unrefined whole cane sugar. The organic unrefined whole cane sugar, or "Sucanat," is not refined, and retains most minerals and vitamins. The organic raw cane sugar, or "Syramena," goes through a first crystallization process (which is when cane juice is first squeezed from organic sugar cane stalks, then evaporated, concentrated or crystallized, and dried using a centrifugal dryer system). No chemical additives are added, and the sugar is not bleached. These unrefined sugars contain slightly more molasses, and are suitable for vegans. They are not processed with bone char or isinglass. You also asked about animal fat based lubricants on chocolate producing machines. Our manufacturer does not use any animal lubricants on their machines. Their lubricants also comply with the H1 release status (food grade lubricants).

What are these wrapped in? Is it bio-degradable?
The first packaging of the mini chocolates is a compound foil of paper, polyethylene, and aluminum and therefore difficult to recycle in most countries. The second packaging is paper and can be recycled. Both are not compostable.
