Transforming the tea industry

We are proud to support the Potong Tea Garden in Darjeeling, India. Once a colonial plantation, Potong is now collectively run by its workers, paving a stronger, more democratic path forward for the community. This revolutionary model generates significant improvements for the garden’s 350 workers and their families, and is helping to spark a badly needed transformation of the tea industry. Most teas–even those that are certified as fair trade–come from large plantations where workers have little say and are trapped in a system of dependency. The small farmers who grow our teas control their land and their livelihoods. Together, we’re building an alternative tea model and a farmer-led future for the tea industry.

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.

Are the tea bags and pouches conpostable?
Hi Becky, thanks for your question. Our tea bag, string and tag are all compostable, however, the paper envelope, because it's lined with plastic, is not. What process do you use to decaffeinate your black tea. Thanks.
Equal Exchange Organic Decaf English Breakfast is decaffeinated by our partners in India through the CO2 process, regarded as the best process for caffeine removal in the industry. Unlike other methods, this process maintains levels of antioxidants, healthy nutrients, and the flavor of pure tea. The process is pretty similar to the decaf coffee process described in this blog post. Here’s how it works: the tea leaves are cleaned and dust is removed. They are soaked in water, and then placed in a pressurized chamber, where CO2 locks onto and removes the caffeine. The leaves are then dried and ground to size.
