The origin of Equal Exchange coffee

More than three decades ago, Equal Exchange brought Café Nica to the US market to demonstrate solidarity with the fledgling people's movement in Nicaragua. The relationship between Equal Exchange and our partners at what became PRODECOOP agricultural cooperative has survived war, embargo, revolution, counter-revolution, and devastating weather events.

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.
