Community resilience in Guatemala

Asociación Chajulense Va´l Vaq Quyol gets its name from the Maya Ixil words for ‘union’ and was founded to support survival in the midst and aftermath of the Guatemalan civil war. Initially, the association focused on basic community needs: building a pharmacy, granary and small store, and supporting farmers in producing corn and selling cattle. They reclaimed an old home that had been usurped by the army to use as an office. And with the help of Mexican coffee farming co-operative UCIRI, started to focus on growing and selling their specialty organic, fair trade, high altitude coffees. Weathering growth years and loss years during intense bouts of coffee leaf rust, the association continues to support and directly impact the livelihoods of their members, more than 3000 families in the San Gaspar Chajul municipality.

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.

"About two years ago my wife and I went to the beautiful state N. Carolina with some friends and they made coffee. I have never been a big coffee drinker, until I was able to taste your Love Buzz Coffee!! I have at least a cup a day sometimes too LOL the only thing is that it must be so popular, that it makes it very difficult to find and when you do find it, it is very expensive! Luckily, I was able to order directly from equal Exchange and the product was shipped right to my door with expediency!! I got to go for now, cause I got a pot ready to go drink!! Thank you all!"

Is love buzz considered an oily bean?: Hi Char, thanks for your question. Our Love Buzz is a blend of Full City Roast and French Roast beans, so you'll find that some of the beans (the French Roast component) will be oily. Oily coffee beans result from lipids within the bean coming to the surface in the form of oil, which can happen during a long roast and is the case for French Roasts, the darkest roast we produce.
