Community resilience in Guatemala

Asociación Chajulense Va´l Vaq Quyol gets its name from the Maya Ixil words for ‘union’ and was founded to support survival in the midst and aftermath of the Guatemalan civil war. Initially, the association focused on basic community needs: building a pharmacy, granary and small store, and supporting farmers in producing corn and selling cattle. They reclaimed an old home that had been usurped by the army to use as an office. And with the help of Mexican coffee farming co-operative UCIRI, started to focus on growing and selling their specialty organic, fair trade, high altitude coffees. Weathering growth years and loss years during intense bouts of coffee leaf rust, the association continues to support and directly impact the livelihoods of their members, more than 3000 families in the San Gaspar Chajul municipality.

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.

Very Old Beans

"We typically purchase this coffee from our local grocery store, but I decided to order a 5lb bag direct from the company hoping I would receive something with more recent roast date then the 2 to 3 month date we usually find while shopping. The beans I received, which I ordered in mid August, had an 18 month best buy date that put the roast date somewhere around mid January making them about 7 months old! When I reached out via the websites chat and provided the best by date and batch number they confirmed the January roast date and I was told they send whatever is on the shelf."
