Building resilience to la roya

When farmers in Mexico found themselves on the front lines of climate change as la roya—the coffee leaf rust fungus—impacted harvests, we sought ways to help them address the threat. Through a dedicated resilience fund, Equal Exchange directly contributed to the replanting and renovation efforts on members' farms. Trainings on la roya mitigation and programs to provide rust-resistant coffee seedlings helped farmers to reestablish their affected crops.

Our worker-owned, solar-generating roastery

At our Massachusetts HQ, our team batch-roasts coffee daily under a 1,418 panel solar array, bringing out the best flavors of each harvest. At the lighter end of the roast spectrum, we accentuate the unique fruity and floral notes within the beans. As the roast length increases, the natural sugars in the coffee beans caramelize and darken to elicit a richer body. Our darkest roasts fully express the beans’ natural oils, yielding subtle smokiness and flavors akin to dark chocolate. At every level, our expert team creates a smooth, clean, and balanced cup with reliable consistency from batch to batch.

Q&A

any low/lower acid cofee
Hi Adele, the acidity described in coffee is actually “perceived acidity” and is not related to the pH of the coffee itself, a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH range goes from 0 - 14; 7 is neutral. When the pH is less than 7, that indicates acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base. Coffee has a pH of 5.3, which is similar to white rice or beer. In general, the lighter the roast, the higher the perceived acidity, with fewer flavors associated with the roast. The darker roasts are the inverse, with lower perceived acidity and more flavors and aromas. A dark roast of ours is our French Roast or Love Buzz. You might also try cold-brewing your coffee which some people feel is easier on their system.
Is it possible to buy Equal Exchange coffee in Europe? Or have it shipped internationally? I recently moved to Germany and I would like to continue drinking my favorite coffee :)
Hi Lily! So nice to hear you're an Equal Exchange fan and are looking for our products in Europe. While we don't ship outside of the US, our sister organization in the UK would be a good option for you to look into https://www.equalexchange.co.uk/how-to-buy/buy-online/ There are many retailers who sell same products that we offer here in the US but have slightly different-looking packaging and can send them to you.
When is the coffee roasted relative to the “best by” date on the package?
Great question! Our coffees are roasted in our West Bridgewater, MA location and you can check the best buy date minus 18 months to find out when that coffee was roasted.
What is the caffeine content of the Mind Body and Soul coffee?
I'm sorry, but we do not test individual coffees for caffeine and the amount of caffeine in a cup is also variable based on your brewing method, steep time, filters, grind size etc. so it is not possible to provide an accurate answer to your question.
